The last email/article was about how STRENGTH & MUSCLE impacts your life now and in the future; how it reduces your chances of illness and injury and add both years to your life and life to your years!
Today is about the other side of the same coin…
AEROBIC FITNESS
aka your engine!
What your aerobic fitness says about you is how well your heart, lungs, blood vessels and muscles work together to supply energy.
Its what determines how easily you can keep going now and what your future is likely to look like.
It matters more than most people realise because, similar to muscle
AEROBIC CAPACITY DECLINES BY ROUGHLY 10% PER DECADE
if it isnt trained.
That means:
getting out of breath easily
slower recovery
lower day to day energy
feeling drained by things that used to feel normal
Aerobic fitness is one of the strongest predictors of long-term health we have.
Higher aerobic capacity is linked with:
lower risk of heart disease
better brain health and memory
improved insulin sensitivity
lower all-cause mortality
Simply put, a better engine means you live longer and better.
Again - no glass ceiling to this. The fitter you are the more your life improves now: energy, recovery, mood, sleep, resistance to illness etc.
And in the future: able to do more and recover better for many more years.
So… how to build your engine…
Spend time moving at an elevated but sustainable pace.
Moderate intensity for longer periods; walking, cycling, rowing, steady running, swimming etc.
Do it regularly.
Heroic efforts dont build engines. But 2-3 steady sessions per week makes a meaningful difference. More isnt always better, but being consistent is key.
Occasional harder efforts.
Short bursts of higher effort improve tolerance and adaptation. Not every sessions, but maybe once a week.
Pair engine and strength work.
Strength gives you the ability to move. Engine keeps you moving. Theyre not separate. Endurance isnt just about the heart and lungs, its still based on keeping the muscles firing!
Together, strength and endurance protect your independence, energy and resilience far better than either alone.
Remember: feeling tired all the time isnt just “getting older”.
Its often just that your engine hasnt been looked after.
In the next email/article ill tie strength and aerobic fitness together and explain the real risk most people dont think about… not dying early, but living a sucky life…
