Really these are some things that bug me about the way people approach fitness…

ALL OR NOTHING THINKING ISN’T HELPING YOU
This is one of the things that seems to cause more people to not make progress than anything else. The idea that if they don’t do everything all of the time, its not worth it.
And nothing could be further from the truth.
People who make the most progress and get the fittest, are the ones who can carry on when things aren’t perfect. Doing things at 60-80% most of the time, is better than doing things 100% only on the rare occasions when things are ideal.
MORE ISN’T BETTER
Sometimes, more is what a person needs. To make more progress or reach higher levels of fitness, they might need to do more than they’re currently doing…
But its not a rule. Because:
Recovery limits adaptation - too much volume or frequency can create chronic fatigue which stalls progress
Diminishing returns - after a certain point, more = less results and eventually no results
CNS stress - Overly doing it can create too much cortisol and suppress recovery hormones
Technique breakdown - High fatigue can lead to poor form and bad habits
Dose - you only need to train between your MEV (minimum effective dosage) and MRV (maximum recoverable volume). Past that = regression, not adaptation
Sustainable and consistent beats burnout & grind.
MANY OF YOU ARE TRAINING HARD BUT NOT SMART
(unless you’re already part of Tough Cookie!)
Take any bootcamp, class or generic online fitness programme, and compare it to anyone who excels in fitness… the difference isn’t how hard you’re trying, its what you’re doing, which is random, generic and non-specific to you.
Its not smart structured training and coaching.
But excelling in fitness isn’t reserved for the elite few. Anyone can excel with the right coach and belief in themselves.
IT DOESN’T MATTER HOW YOU TRAIN IF RECOVERY IS PANTS
Training is only the stimulus for adaptation, but the improvement actually comes when you recover from the stimulus.
So if you think youre doing ‘just fine’ sleeping less than 8 hours per night, youre probably missing out. Same goes with food, stress & life balance. You need as much focus on that as the training.
NO SINGLE FOOD OR INGREDIENT BAD FOR YOU
Bring on the arguments!
One food source that lacks nutrition or is highly calorific, or one ingredient in a food source… sugar, aspartame, fat, chemicals… are the cause of your problems.
It always comes back to dose & habits!
Your repeated habits and choices are what affect the quality of your nutrition. Not one meal or one food you ‘think you need to avoid’.
Even foods with ‘chemicals’ (everything is a chemical) or artificial ingredients, or have ingredients linked to illness - are 99% of the time, in small enough doses to have no effect.
That means what you should be focussing on isn’t avoiding certain foods, its addressing your habits and choices and learning what the right amount of consumption actually is!
Sort out your relationship with food and don’t be scare-mongered into eating like a baby.
SOMETIMES YOUR GOAL ACTUALLY TURNS OUT TO BE JUST A NICE IDEA
This is when someone ‘wants’ something, but when they learn what they need to do to achieve it, they’re not actually willing.
Its the age old idea that we can look at someone ‘successful’ and think ‘I want that’, but actually, when you learn about their life and what they had to do, you think ‘nah thats not for me’!
I actually think most people would be willing if they had faith in themselves to achieve it. You have to pay the cost of progress and success… it doesnt come for free. But I think more people are capable than they give themselves credit for.
Its when it seems like a mountain that the task becomes daunting… but all you need to focus on, is the next step… then the next, and the next, and eventually, you can summit!
Honestly, I could keep going… maybe ill do a part 2, but ive already sat here for too long thinking about this!
I just really want everyone reading this to realise and learn something.
And ill be honest, I want people reading this to join Tough Cookie, because I know from our track record and the growing body of proof we have, that we can help you unlock more untapped potential in yourself. I think we do it better than most too.
