The Mental Battle with Eating

So youre trying to improve how you eat, either to lose weight, improve your health and physique or just to be healthier.
But you have this mental battle where you think you know what you need to do, but for some reason you cant really stick with it.
And you end up spinning your wheels trying to improve, but not successfully changing anything.
And that leaves you feeling frustrated, annoyed, or just feeling hopeless.
“I just cant do it…”
I see it often and even have short periods where i feel the same!
But when i see my clients battling with this, it makes me want to grab them and inject them with an imaginary vial of self belief.
I feel frustrated on their behalf, because i know that theyre 100% capable of overcoming this cycle theyre stuck in, but when they feel defeated so many times it seems like they cant.
One particular client of mine struggled with this.
They would really try to ‘be good’ for a while, and end up yo-yoing from good for a while, to totally losing it all.
We’d spoken about what they needed to do; how many calories they needed, the protein, and even how to achieve it around their working patterns, lifestyle & foodie preferences.
But it just didnt quite click.
So we stopped and had another look at things. We figured they knew what they needed to do theoretically, but in practice it wasnt happening.
So we looked at how they were even thinking about it in the first place, what their brain was telling them, and how they felt about their progress - and thats when things started to fall into place.
Let me explain the exact steps we took to address the psychological factors that held her - and might be holding you back.
“Willing is not enough, we must do. Knowing is not enough, we must apply” - Bruce Lee
Look at the evidence
One problem was the “If Im not 100%, i wont stick with it, I need to go hard so i see results quickly”
Well, thinking longer term - thats proved not to work, for you or for the 1000s of people in nutrition studies. If it did, you wouldnt be here still stuck.
So firstly, lets agree, your current mindset hasnt worked. It has to change.
Address self belief
Not believing that you have it in you to ‘change’ is the foundation. If you really dont think you can do it you just wont have the drive to properly try. At best youll kind of give it a bit of a go, but because you dont believe it, you wont really give it a proper shot.
From working with 100s of people improving their nutrition, as well as the research that backs this, i can tell you practically ANYONE can do it. You’re no different (in a nice way).
But it starts (not with the belief) with the KNOWLEDGE that you are able to achieve it with the right guidance.
Change your identity
When it comes to making habit changes stick, its about shifting your identity.
Its a subtle shift, but those who ‘try’ are ‘thinking about it’ or ‘working towards it’ - non of which are bad, but still have one foot placed back behind you in the proverbial room of who you used to be! You havent fully committed yet.
Interlude!: This can be for a few different reasons -
youre scared of trying and failing
you want to believe that its not possible for you which is why you havent made it work yet in your life
you think youre going to miss out on enjoyment in what you consume
your not ready - or dont have the energy - to put some effort into changing
etc etc
Think longer term
The idea that you might have to do things differently and that it MIGHT be a slower process, doesnt sound appealing… but again, what youve done so far has actually taken you far longer and still hasnt worked! So this could actually be the quicker approach, but it still requires some patience and delayed gratification.
Now reverse engineer
When weve got you set up mentally ready to lock in and engage with this change, and its no longer just a nice idea, we can start APPLYING.
We take what you need to achieve, then figure out the daily and weekly steps you need to take to achieve it.
How many calories (on average) per day will a. be a suitable result & b. still be a result even if its not exactly our target.
How much protein do we want to be aiming for, and what does that look like on an average easy day + what other options do we have… etc.
Then we make that part of who you are and what you do.
Be it to achieve it.
Youre only ever awarded results AFTER youre already doing whats needed consistently. You have to focus on being THAT PERSON already.
Think very little about the end goal, and a lot about what youre doing and who you are day to day & let the results come naturally.
FINALLY! (and probably most importantly)
Address underlying issues.
All of this is great in an idea world, but the world is not ideal.
Youre stressed, busy, experience anxeity, lack knowledge, other people around you arent on the same page, etc etc.
So sometimes we need to address these things with other forms of management, such as helping you relieve stress in other ways, leaving you with more headspace, energy and motivation to make good food choices.
This is partly solved with the identity change, but partly relies on you addressing some lifestyle factors too if needed.
This is a very individual factor, and something I help each client with personally.
Im currently doing FREE NUTRITION ASSESSMENTS for anyone wanting help in figuring all this out.
