How many times per week do you need to train to be in good shape!?

Recently the recommendations have changed.

It used to be 30 minutes of activity per day… but now the recommendations are

  • Strength training 2 x week

  • 150 minutes of moderate of 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week

  • Some purposeful movement every day

But its like this:

If you’re training 2 x week, you really need to make those sessions effective and get some vigorous exercise and some strength training in there.

Thats probably going to be dependant on having a good quality training plan or coaching to achieve that, unless you really know what you’re doing.

Doing more than 2 sessions a week can be really useful too, and for some, its going whats needed...

If you’ve built up a decent tolerance to training and are progressing well - or want to progress faster, 3-5 sessions will be great, as long as there is a smart structure behind your training!

(You don’t want to burn yourself out, get injured or get diminishing returns on your efforts.)

But for many people, 2 quality sessions is enough!

Heres some data/proof from us, that shows how effective a couple of training sessions per week can be!

Our members at Tough Cookie Gym do an average of 2.7 Small Group Personal Training sessions with us; most do 3 SGPT sessions per week, a few do 4 sessions per week and about 40% do 2 sessions per week.

(And some do additional sessions outside of SGPT too.)

So on average, about 3 sessions per week.

But heres the kicker:

Our members who are doing just 2 Small Group PT sessions with us are able to get fantastic results.

In our last block of training

40% of our members did 2 Small Group PT sessions per week.

We saw an average improvement of 22% in their strength & fitness!

Charlene increased her Front Squat 5 rep max and her Bench Press 5 rep max by 16% and 44% respectively!

Chelsea went from just about being able to do 1 pull up, to being able to do 5 good reps!

(And not only that, but theyre consistent: the average member has been with us for nearly 4 years!)

Of course our members who do more than 2 sessions a week with us also had great results, but this goes to show that you don’t need to find 5 hours a week to train if you don’t have it.

Unless your goal is to compete in some way, 2 well structured, ideally, personally coached training sessions per week can produce great improvements in strength, fitness and health.

More can sometimes produce more, but the jump from zero to 2 is vastly more important than the jump from 2 to 3.

And the training matters a lot!

Two or three random workouts arent the same thing as 2 intelligently designed sessions that are part of a progressive plan and performed consistently.

So, you dont need to rearrange your life around the gym to be strong, fit and healthy.

We organise the gym around you.

Tough Cookie IS personal training. But early on in my coaching career it was obvious that the ‘training’ was only part of what people needed. The problem people had was never the workouts, since id ta
