“My coach is the best…”

“This gym is the best…”

Says the person whos been to a total of 3 gyms and had 1 coach in their life…

Honestly, there is no ‘best’.

But everyone is biased to what theyve committed to.

The closest youre getting to the best, is the one that aligns with you the most!

Even if thats a place that focussed more on disco lights than your actual workout… cool, if you need to feel like youre at a rave to enjoy training, you do you.

What you should look for in a gym or a coach is the right fit for YOU.

So - think about what actually matters.

Is it:

The best coaching?

Top quality equipment?

Good vibes?

A sauna?

Cheapness?

Exclusivity?

Something you dont have to commit to?

Something you DO have to commit to?

Someone to coach you whos ripped?

Someone to coach you who is a fountain of knowledge?

A coach who gets you?

Someone who goes above and beyond?

(You get the idea.)

Then look for that.

Theres all sorts of fitness facilities and coaches with all manner of niche and quirk.

Levels of expertise and experience.

Attitude and opinions.

I, for example, am not a drill seargent. I dont scream at you to be better.

I also value effort over outcome, becuase i know that outcomes take time and are based on repeated action, not heroic bouts of motivation.

I think deeply about healthy and fitness and like to work things out - definitely not surface level.

I know youre not just struggling because you dont care, i know theres other things going on that have led you to where you are.

Again, you get the picture.

So when youre looking for a gym or coach, i could list the typical:

  • pick someone who cares

  • find a gym with a community

  • a service that makes it easy to follow

  • somewhere or someone who tracks your results

  • someone who keeps you accountable

  • someone who takes time to get to know and understand you

  • where the culture is driven by comparison or competition

and so on… which all matter!

But in all honesty, its more about a fit that suits your personality and life.

I like to think the people at Tough Cookie are friendly, funny, caring, well meaning people with a good work ethic, drive and some passion. Many have a strong competitive edge, but were smart enough to know thats not the be all and end all.

So - go out and do a little bit of homework. Dont just find the cheapest, or biggest.

Tough Cookie IS personal training. But early on in my coaching career it was obvious that the ‘training’ was only part of what people needed. The problem people had was never the workouts, since id ta
